Expectations for CTTG Members

All CTTG members are expected to contribute and collaborate with our team of researchers and clinicians to improve transfusion practice. This can include participating in CTTG research studies, contributing to working group activities, attending the annual CTTG meeting and attending monthly lecture series.

Being a CTTG member will give you the opportunity to connect and collaborate with national leaders in Transfusion Medicine research and participate in high-quality clinical trials and other research projects. You will also be supported by a network of like-minded researchers from across the country. You will have access to a Transfusion Medicine-specific research mentorship program and will be able to develop ideas and relationships with other members. As a clinical trialist, CTTG can help identify participating sites and support centralized study activities. What can you contribute to CTTG? *

Clinical Trials Working Group: The Clinical Trials WG supports the development of clinical research programs and facilitates collaborative clinical research by engaging with investigators across institutions and disciplines. This group organizes and oversees the process for scientific peer reviews of submitted proposals, and the evaluation of new initiatives seeking funding through public and private granting agencies. This group arranges for the provision of methodological and content expertise in the development of a research program, identifies potential collaborative partners, and provides a letter of endorsement for funding agencies if a clinical research program is endorsed. This WG will track the progress of CTTG supported trials and make this information available on the CTTG website.
Common Data Working Group: The Common Data WG’s role is to map, guide/lead creation of a platform, and to utilize data in a regional and national scope from vein-to-vein to further the interests of transfusion medicine. This team’s main deliverable is a multi-centre transfusion medicine data warehouse. They are currently developing minimum standards for data inclusion, a common data dictionary, and a process for triaging data requests. The Common Data WG also publishes manuscripts describing their methodology.
Community Engagement Working Group: The Community Engagement WG provides consultative advice to researchers during project development regarding the impact of research on community stakeholders (blood donors, transfusion recipients and Canadians at large), and engages community stakeholder individuals in transfusion research initiatives. This WG’s focus is strengthening partnerships with the research community, patients and their families, donors, and blood operators along with increasing collaboration with other trials networks. Current projects include providing a written guidance document outlining an approach to community stakeholder involvement in research and developing a resource which includes a summary of stakeholder websites and contact information.
Education and Career Mentorship Working Group: The Education and Career Mentorship WG ensures that the CTTG membership maintains a high academic standard and competency through the provision of mentorship and educational support. This group provides support to CTTG members via two main activities: coordination of a monthly lecture series and creation and maintenance of a mentorship pairing program. This includes establishment of a ‘mentorship contact program’ for members seeking a mentor and developing a list of expectations for both mentors and mentees.
Knowledge Translation Working Group: The Knowledge Translation WG assists in dissemination, implementation, and contributing to the design of studies, of the CTTG outputs and/or outputs of other Canadian transfusion medicine researchers and targeted stakeholder groups. This WG has created a toolkit for CTTG members and is focusing on refining it for use in funding proposals and for strategically disseminating project results. The WG is working on increasing its availability to network members via the CTTG website as well as providing support through review of KT sections of grant proposals.
Translational Research Working Group: The Translational Research WG’s role is to create a pathway to generate evidence-based research to inform and support practice. The key activities of this group include building a library of SOPs for different biological samples and creating template consent forms for biobanking for use across CTTG projects to facilitate future translational research. They are also liaising with the Common Data Platform to plan a data request and extraction strategy for biobank data.
